The McDonough County Cemetery Marker Project was originally undertaken by the McDonough County Historical Society, but it is now overseen by the McDonough County Genealogical Society.
Thank you to Jean Ray of the McDonough County Genealogical Society for creating a page on their website for cemetery information compiled by Gil Belles of the McDonough County Historical Society.
Please go to: https://www.mcdcgs.com/cemeteries/
for more information about McDonough County cemeteries and the Cemetery Marker Project.
The work begun by Gil Belles will be maintained and expanded by the McDonough County Genealogical Society.
McDonough County of west-central Illinois has almost 100 cemeteries and burial sites,
many of them are no longer in use and are difficult to locate.
Here is information from the McDonough County Historical Society to assist in locating cemeteries in the county.
GPS Coordinates of McDonough County Cemeteries (and driving directions!)
-------------------------------------------------
Previously, the McDonough County Historical Society located cemeteries in the county and placed a marker at each one, so the cemeteries would not be lost and so that those who came before us will not be forgotten.
A marker has been placed at 95 cemeteries in the county.
The McDonough County Cemetery Marker Project was a project of
the McDonough County Historical Society, Macomb, Illinois.
The project was coordinated by Gil Belles
of the McDonough County Historical Society.
The cemetery markers project was supported by Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb and Blandinsville, the Community Quality of Life Advisory Committee, Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb, Table Grove State Bank,MidAmerica National Bank, the McDonough County Highway Department, the McDonough County Genealogical Society and the McDonough County Historical Society.
"McDonough County Historical Society - The Cemetery Markers Project" e-book
A fun way to see all the beautiful photographs
of the 95 cemetery signs
installed by the McDonough County Historical Society.
It is a "page-flipping" way to see the entire project and read all about all of the cemeteries with signs in McDonough County -along with seeing images of people who care about each of these unique historic resting places.
The e-book contains a photograph of each cemetery sign
as well as the story of the cemetery in a press release written when the sign was installed.
The Cemetery Markers Project was coordinated by Gil Belles.
